The Amazon Kindle is a series of e-book readers produced by Amazon.com. Amazon Kindle devices enable users to shop for, download, browse, and read e-books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, and other digital media via wireless networking.
Kindle can download not just books, but also journals, newspapers, magazines and blogs. Once books are downloaded in the Kindle, the user can read as he pleases, continuously or intermittently, without having to recharge the device often. The battery lasts for about two weeks when the wireless mode is turned off, and for about five days when this feature is on. Even with continuous reading, the Kindle does not heat up as other devices tend to, thus never distracting the reader in any way.::;"

"An interesting discovery was that one USA traveler was using the 2nd Gen Kindle purely for the 3g connectivity, for email and twitter no less. 20 bucks well spent was the simple answer." GENIUS!!

Have you seen now in Android 4.2 there is a feature for multiple user accounts. Therefore the four of you could have used the same tablet but in different (and very private) ways? Loving Android at the mo.

Hi Richard

I agree that making ebooks is very much a 'crafted' task and Baldur has written previously about the "ebook developer". In the short-term there is no easy way to produce an ebook without digging into the code. I do like the idea from Liz Daly about a possible future built around "streaming" content so that we can adjust, change and re-purpose ebooks.

Regarding CSS, I purposely kept it very light-weight as to maximise reach and minimise possible "beef". I did use the 'page-break' css to force the ibooks app to play nice with chapter beginnings. I thought i'd write about the CSS in a future post rather than turn this one into a nerd-fest! I do fear that each format will implement css spec differently (same as browsers) and that we'll never be easily using it.

The PDF file format has its place but this is largely for print, yet is seen as the standard ebook file format in education. Because it isn't reflowable it fails to adapt for our mobile devices and this is a problem.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Good work Zak!

It's sill uncannily like hand-crafting a website in the '90s - including the cross browser testing! I wonder if e-books will succumb to CMS-like applications in time?

I notice you didn't mention use of CSS - this is very wise as I found it the main downfall of my attempt to convert losslessly from EPUB to Kindle. But EPUB does support a fair bit of CSS (so you can at least 'default' font decisions) and I believe the next version of Mobi will have more CSS support.

It would yet be great to wean creators authors off the idea of 'the PDF' as a fixed, reference or canonical format, rather than just one possible manifestation of the logical structure and content (with platform-specific embellishments where appropriate).

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. In this series I hope to uncover some great uses that can inspire others to give digital books a go, particularly as we have some traction.

I too wished the eBook phenonemom had progressed quicker than it has, but am grateful that the forward momentum is still evident.

I came across this article by searching 'howies sizing guide' in Google! User experience is something that's (I believe, anyway) grossly overlooked. What makes sense to me, as a business/website owner doesn't always make sense to others.
